I am currently producing two webisode series called You Speak, and Yes, And..., and I am looking for artists that would like to be part of the collaborative process by providing background music. You Speak asks people four questions based on the four aspects of their being - heart, mind, body, and spirit, and is meant to promote greater understanding and community involvement. Yes, And... is a form of improvisational, serial storytelling that explores the growth…

When I first heard about the "We Can Be Heroes" David Bowie tribute in honor of hi 65th birthday, I didn't know what it was called, but I really wanted to do the title song. The song Heroes is actually the only Bowie song I know how to play, and I'll have to admit that I first heard it from the Wallflowers in the Godzilla movie. Nevertheless, it's…

A few weeks ago, I went to the much ballyhooed Cosmic Groove All Stars show put on by Sarasota Music Scene and The Closet at the Sarasota Lanes bowling alley. Over the last year, as I have gotten more involved in the growing movement of independent musical artists making their mark in the community, I have watched as the bands and solo performers have tried to carve out a niche for themselves within the available venues. Yet as progressive as these artists are in striving to create original…

When I was preparing for The Rucksack Cabaret last week, I considered scripting out what I would say in between. My concern was that in addition to the time I would have to spend memorizing, I feel that there is just too much that I want to say and such a wide variety of people that I want to say it to, that scripting might inhibit the flow. So I decided to just go with the flow. As it was, I appreciated being to simply connect with the audience, trying to find out where they were,…

In light of all the "Your Band Sucks" drama I felt it an ok time to organize and write down my thoughts. No need to be anonymous, I don't hate anyone in this town and I've had some good times, but as a local musician who's band plays regularly I felt I could provide a little insight. I'm not in a Finch House band but I am in an all original band called Dune Train. We don’t play indie music, we play rock and roll. We started as a three piece jam band and quickly realized there is zero love…

After a long while of struggling with it, I've come to grips with the fact that I, like every other person on the planet, have an ego. And although I have often struggled for its dissolution in order for a higher Self to emerge, some even say that I have a rather big ego. Yet I've come to realize that I can either spend the rest of my life wrestling with the inevitable or I can just embrace who I am, have a little fun doing it, and hopefully help some other people realize that our egos…

Considering that I've always had a bit of a wandering streak, my mom would jokingly call me the Prodigal Son whenever I would return home. They didn't kill the fatted calf or anything, and I'm not sure if she ever realized how apt her description of me might be, but suffice it to say that I have strayed from the straight and narrow path offered to me by my Southern Baptist upbringing from time to time. Though the story in the Bible depicts the reckless young man as being submerged in a shame…

Tomorrow night (12/9/11), I'll be performing my one man show "The Rucksack Cabaret." I did a version of it a few years ago where I peppered in some covers and made a few comments between songs, but this one is going to be all my songs and the stories in between. All of the songs in the show were written between here and California after I hitchhiked to Colorado and tooled up and down the west coast on a motorcycle before landing in the City of Angels.
Initially, I took to the road…

With Guest: Scone Train (SRQ), Cats in the Basement (SRQ), Elysian Sex Drive (SRQ St. Pete), The Asteroid Shop (Austin)
I first saw Gringo Star at Skippers Smokehouse In 2009 with Cracker. Since the Skippers show I have been a huge fan, last year I saw them again with my friend and Scone Train member Susan Rouwhorst, she had hung out with them at a show and made friends with the band members, she and I then said we should get them to play a show in Sarasota with local SRQ bands, and…

The Drummer's Night series of shows just celebrated it's fourth installment recently at the Cock and Bull pub, and I couldn't have been more uninterested. Let's just say I went to the first two and decided I had gone to one too many. Here's the problem with them: every single jam inevitably winds up being the same general beat played at the same general tempo. It seems like all the drummers are either looking around trying to read everybody else's playing, or lost in their own 80 minute…

Every now and then... actually, as often as I decide to become aware of it... I find myself in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. On these occasions, when I slow down and simply savor the abundant beauty and vitality that life has to offer, I get to participate in moments so sublime and enjoyable that all I can truly do is try to share the moment with as many people as possible. Fortunately, due to the technology afforded to me, I am finding more opportunities to do just…
