Claire Franklin
Webmaster and Development Coordinator

Claire was born in Rugby, England and moved with her family Stateside at the age of 6. She grew up in Pennsylvania (both the Pittsburgh area and the Pocono Mountains) before moving to Florida in her senior year of high school. As a child, she spent 3 years learning to play the cello and performing in her elementary school orchestra. She also studied music and voice throughout her childhood and was always a member of her school choirs in addition to being selected for County and District Chorus in both elementary and junior high years – the only songbird selected from her school on several occasions.

At the age of 12, Claire found her true musical calling. While eating a late night dinner with her family, she could hear the band playing at the nightclub in the same building and immediately announced that she wanted to play the drums. Having such a cool and supportive family certainly helped here, because her parents were actually excited at the idea of hearing drums banging in the house day in and day out and within a week went out and bought her a beginner’s drumset. She then set about teaching herself how to play the drums by watching MTV videos for hours-on-end and playing along to anything and everything that came on the radio. She also taught herself how to read drum music so that she may join her high school marching band where she played the snare drum.

After moving to Florida, Claire decided she wanted to be in a real rocknroll band, so she got together with some schoolmates to form the obligatory first garage band that was truly awful but so much fun. From there she moved to St. Pete at the age of 17 to attend St. Petersburg Junior College and play drums in the Tampa-based indie band “Bullwinkle“. Bullwinkle made quite a name for itself, both with its on-stage musical offerings and its off-stage antics. After the oh-so-dramatic implosion of Bullwinkle, Claire then enjoyed a brief stint with a really obscure band called Silicone Bob, before running off to Sarasota, where she joined up with singer-songwriter-guitarist DeLaran to form Elysian Sex Drive in 1993. After a couple of years, she then left ESD to join Frog & Flower, then Chime, then Jeff Young (formerly of Megadeth) and now back with Elysian Sex Drive for the last 5 years (this time around) and counting. Rumor has it, Claire has also been seen recently playing drums or cajon with The Woodies, Scone Train, and Stiff Saints.

Ms. Franklin has also picked some other tricks-of-the-trade along the way. In 2004, she earned a Bachelor of Information Technology degree in Computer Systems (Summa Cum Laude) from American Intercontinental University. She has produced and co-produced several albums and operates her own in-house recording and multimedia studio, Blue Medusa Studios, where she is currently engineering and producing several Sarasota area bands. Most recently, she created and produced “Noise Ordinance,” a 38 band double-disc compilation showcasing original music based in the Sarasota area, complete with a massive CD Release Party that is still to this day the topic of many discussions! Claire has also been a webmaster and graphic designer for over 10 years and was the creator and founder of the (now defunct) Sarasota Band Buzzz website back in the mid 1990′s which showcased and featured original Sarasota and Tampa Bay area bands. She also created the online Florida Music Network in the ’90s, which was a network webring (anyone remember those?) for original Florida indie bands, to help crosspromote and assist each other in booking gigs all around Florida. She has also been at the helm of 2 teeny tiny indie record labels: “Tasty Records” and “Wak the Kitty Records” and once even owned a gift shop in downtown Bradenton for a while! For her ‘Clark Kent’ daytime persona, Claire currently plays the role of database administrator and GIS mapmaker for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Claire has always held the belief that local original music is a critical part of any successful town or community and that local artistic talent helps give a community it’s identity and should receive the recognition it deserves in return. Sarasota, in particular, being a both a tourist hotspot and being internationally recognized for the arts is a natural fit for the diverse and amazing musical talent that resides here. She is honored to be a part of SarasotaMusicScene.com to help showcase and promote the amazing music and talent this town has to offer the world! Claire can also be seen around town popping up in unexpected places to play drums and percussion with random assortments of musicians and bands.
