Katherine Derr (a.k.a., Kat White Star, a.k.a., Kitteh Kat, a.k.a., Kathy (only to close childhood friends) has been singing in choirs, bands, street corners and late night drunken parties for twenty odd years. I grew up in Sarasota and for those of you who remember the Black Angus Restaurant on the trail, I used to sing for ice cream sundays in the bar when I was around 12. Early on I associated singing with a reward, now I know it has “saved” me in many ways. I became known for my a capella stylings at open mics in the early 90′s, as I did not have a band or play an instrument. This public exposure (not that kind, c’mon), lead me to the other talented musicians and the core group of girls I’ve been playing with for 20 years in various incarnations: Elysian Sex Drive (DeLaran, Lova Michelle Patterson, Claire Franklin, Pam Fetterman…and now Evan Katz as well- who is not a GIRL). The band list that we have collectively been in thru the years is: Blue Earth River, Silver Quill, Frog & Flower, Chime, Bullwinkle and Elysian Sex Drive. At any rate, I guess I’ve been doing this for a while, so maybe that qualifies me to be some kind of editor, or maybe I was just available. I do know that I love music and I love what I see happening here in Sarasota- as far as the music scene goes….so I am ALL in, to write about, report on, mingle and dance among the talented and sublime artists that surround and inspire me.
